Malindi is a strong base for combining Indian Ocean experiences with history, culture and nearby nature. The right excursion depends on whether you want marine activities, a relaxed coastal day, cultural sightseeing or a combination of several experiences.
Malindi marine experiences
Malindi Marine National Park and Reserve was established in 1968 and is recognised by Kenya Wildlife Service as an important marine conservation area. It is located close to Malindi town, making it practical to include in a coastal day itinerary.
Marine activities can be combined with time on the beach or other local attractions. Where conditions and availability allow, your itinerary can be adapted around snorkeling, boat experiences and other coastal interests.
Malindi, Watamu and the North Coast
Malindi and Watamu are close enough to combine when you want to see more of Kenya’s north coast without changing hotels every night. Watamu adds experiences around Mida Creek, marine conservation and nearby Gede Ruins.
Explore our Watamu excursions page and Malindi Marine National Park guide when planning a combined north-coast itinerary.
Combine Malindi with a safari
A coastal holiday does not have to be separate from a Kenya safari. Depending on your route, Malindi can be combined with Tsavo, Amboseli or other safari areas, creating a coast-and-wildlife itinerary instead of a single-destination holiday.
